Orkney Livestock Association held the first sale of cattle of a known BVD status in the United Kingdom April 2002, and has held many sales since.

Following the success of these, and the fact that nearly all farms in Orkney are taking part in the BVD eradication programme, Orkney Auction Mart offered their annual show and sale of suckled calves to be organised by OLA and to be run under their rules. This show of known BVD status calves is also a first in this country.

A total of 226 calves were forward for sale, including 15 that were born before 1 January 2003. All calves born on or after 1 January 2003 were eligible to be shown. The judge was Mr Richard Taylor who has a BVD Accredited herd at Brencherhouse in Birsay. He awarded the supreme championship title to a tremendous Charolais sired steer calf shown by Johnny Thomson of Cogle and Company, Newbigging, South Ronaldsay. Reserve overall went to a pure Limousin steer shown by Gary and Clare Flett of Leary in Birsay.

After the show and presentation of prizes, the calves were sold. Top gross and kilo price was realised by the Supreme Champion. This charolais steer calf from Cogle. Newbigging, South Ronaldsay scaled 325kgs and sold for £800 (246.2p). The Reserve Champion was the Limousin steer calf from Flett, Leary, Birsav wtlich was 295kgs and sold for £569 (192.9p).
