SALE REPORT - SPECIAL SALE OF BREEDING STOCK AND BULLING HEIFERS ON THURSDAY 23 APRIL 2009

ORKNEY LIVESTOCK ASSOCIATION
OLA’S annual spring sale of breeding stock took place at Orkney Auction Mart on Thursday 23 April 2009. There was a reduced entry from previous years but trade was excellent with supply not meeting demand. All stock forward was BVD accredited and vaccinated.
First through the ring was an 11 year old Simmental cross cow in calf to a Simmental bull that sold for £800. This was followed by two three year old Simmental cross cows with Simmental calves at foot that sold for £1,580 and £1,350. These were all from the herd belonging to A & F Clark, Quoydale, Hoy that also has Johne’s accredited status.
Seven Limousin cross heifers in calf to a Limousin bull from the recently dispersed breeding herd belonging to G & S Linnitt, Gaira, South Ronaldsay (first Johne’s qualifying) averaged £1,267 and sold up to £1,550.
The bulling heifers sold were of good quality and fetched a top price of £1,240 per head for a Simmental cross from Mr Brian Ridland, Aikerness, Evie.
Other bulling heifer prices:- Linnabrake, Stronsay (AAx) 565kgs £1,080; Howequoy, Holm (AAx) 495kgs £1,080, (BBx) 445kgs £1,140, (Limx) 425kgs £920; Beaquoy, Dounby (AAx & Limx) 412kgs £800, (AAx) 480kgs £780, (Limx) 400kgs £740; Strathore, Shapinsay (BBx) 500kgs £1,020, (Limx) 435kgs £900; Nigley, Evie (Salersx) 460kgs £1,000, 400kgs £980, 418kgs £1,020; Northfield Farms, Burray (Johne’s Accredited) (AA) 530kgs £1,060, 480kgs £1,120, 465kgs £1,100; Aikerness, Evie (Simx) 500kgs £1,120, (Luingx) 490kgs £1,140.
Breeding bulls sold up to £2,050 for a four year old Aberdeen Angus from A & A Foubister, Netherton, Holm. A two year old Blonde d’Aquitaine from C & K Omand, Oback, South Ronaldsay realised £1,300.
