The OLA sale of 278 BVD accredited grazing cattle took place on Monday after the prime and OTM cattle. The sale was preceded by a show arranged by Orkney Auction Mart and sponsored by Hamish Maclean Farm Products.

 

The champion steer was a 490kg Limousin cross from R J Taylor, Brencherhouse, Birsay that sold for £990 to the judge. The champion heifer was a 410kg Limousin cross from Fersness Farms, Eday that sold for £1,060. This was top gross and kilo price for heifers on the day. Judge Lee Coghill from Newbigging in Birsay commented “some of the classes could have done with more entries, but all in all the cattle forward made a good show but the champions were easy choices”.

Store steers averaged 186.5p per kilo and £745.12 per head. Top kilo price was 220.2p and was attained by A & A Foubister, Netherton, Holm with a 420kg Belgian Blue cross that sold for £925. Top gross price was £1040 that was paid for a 575kg Simmental cross from J E Hourston, Bigging Cottage, Dounby (180.9p).   Store heifers averaged 178.9p per kilo and £674 per head.
